ARGUMENTS OFFERED BY MY CHILD (AGE 6)
AGAINST THE PROPOSITION THAT THE
NINTENDO-64 CONSOLE BE IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED OFF

[PARAPHRASED]

I.

It has come to my attention that you, the author of the innumerable rules that apply to young residents of this domicile, might be experiencing a certain fatigue. Surely the vast, intricate, interlocking and draconian collection of rules that you maintain here must require a certain expenditure of energy to devise and enforce. May I propose, then, in an effort to relieve you ever so slightly of this burden, that I may be permitted to enact a small rule from time to time? It would only be a tiny molecule of a rule, barely measurable when set against the towering edifice of proscription that you have erected. This rule being: I can play Nintendo when I want.

II.

Through no fault of your own, it has almost certainly escaped your attention that the amount of time I have spent playing Nintendo today is significantly less than that enjoyed by my sibling. Please do not become upset when I tell you that she has behaved in a most gluttonous manner toward the Nintendo, and has bullied me mercilessly in an attempt to make certain that I do not achieve the same skill level as she. I can assure you that during this difficult time I was the very model of forebearance. But now, to be confronted with your demand just as I had found a small sliver of time to play myself, is more than my small heart can bear without breaking.

III.

Finally, and with regret, I must inform you that your raising the question of turning off the Nintendo has come at a most inopportune time. Dutifully attempting to listen to your request at that precise moment occasioned a certain hesitation in my hands as they gripped the controller, which has caused me to misjudge my leap toward the Star of Invulnerability. The aforementioned being an evanescent thing, it has already vanished -- if you look closely you will see the puff of smoke that marks the place where it stood. Now, it happens that without the protection offered by this device, completing the remainder of the challenge level has become a statistical impossibility, at my skill level, and perhaps even at yours. Fairness demands, therefore, that I be permitted to restart this level -- with full vitality, and free from the sort of interruption that would cause this to happen again. Once I have completed the challenge level, and perhaps the next one (it being hardly worth succeeding at the challenge level if one is not going to taste the fruit of the level concealed beyond it), we can resume this discussion, from the beginning, giving you the opportunity to re-evaluate my arguments in a calm, rational context.
